While the ISO Standards provide a good framework to develop & improve your business every ISO Certification comes with a cost, therefore Start-ups & SMEs often need to establish which ISOs would give them the best or fastest Return on Investment, before taking a step-by step approach to gaining multiple Certifications.
For most ISO 9001 is the first Port of Call. 9001 looks at every aspect of how you manage your Business, therefore giving you the tools to analyse how you operate your business, discover areas where you can improve, making your processes & ultimately your business, more robust. This Cert is the one most called on for Tenders or new opportunities. The exception can be IT businesses or businesses that hold a lot of critical information, then 27001 becomes more important to secure your information & gain the confidence of potential suppliers – remember M&S were taken down through one of their Supplier’s IT Systems.
ISO 14001 tends to be asked for more in Construction, Installation, Manufacture & Haulage where Environmental impacts can be greatest, or Public Sector & others where Environmental impact is considered a priority – similarly ISO 45001 where Health & Safety generates concerns.
Every year ISO perform a survey of certifications to their Management System Standards. The survey shows the number of valid certificates to ISO standards (such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001) reported for each country, each year.
